Quick Answer
Choose an Instagram auto responder for comments, incoming DMs or Story events. Compare fixed replies, AI instructions and the limits of each workflow.
An auto responder is useful when an actual incoming event has a predictable answer. Choose the response type before configuring a rule. This guide helps you decide what to automate; the auto-reply product page covers Repli’s commercial offering.
Start with one recurring request
Review real inquiries and select a question with information you can keep accurate. A guide link or maintained service page is a simpler first rule than an open-ended complaint or custom quote. Do not automate sensitive judgments, refunds or guarantees.
Comments: provide the requested resource
A selected-post keyword such as GUIDE can trigger a configured private response. An optional public reply and the private reply have separate delivery results. For configuration details, follow the comment-to-DM setup tutorial instead of treating every responder as a comment campaign.
Incoming DMs: answer a specific keyword
Use a fixed response when an incoming DM asks for maintained information, such as PRICE. Inspect keyword scope to avoid unrelated matches. This does not mean Repli can contact everyone who follows you or scrape prospects for cold outreach. See keyword automation.
Story events: choose the supported event
Story replies and mentions are different events. Configure the specific supported trigger rather than assuming every view, reaction or mention grants identical access. The Story workflow page explains their boundaries.
Fixed copy versus AI
Use fixed copy when the answer should remain the same: a resource URL, service information or a clear acknowledgment. AI chat uses configured instructions and available credit to generate answers. It can make mistakes and is not a guaranteed fallback for every unmatched keyword. Use the AI configuration tutorial to review persona, triggers and unknown-answer behavior separately.
Write a small response plan
- List the incoming event and the requested information.
- Record the accurate answer and real destination link.
- Decide which questions require your personal review.
- Configure one rule and read its active state.
- Test the exact incoming event from a different account.
- Inspect delivery errors before expanding scope.
For example, “Here is our current service page: [link]. Please reply with any custom request” delivers maintained information without promising an automatic quote or reservation.
Respect conversation and access boundaries
Ordinary automatic DMs use the eligible 24-hour conversation window. A comment private reply is a separate entry point, not an unrestricted sequence. API use is not evidence of Meta endorsement or a guarantee against account restrictions.
When a person needs you, use the available local takeover/pause controls and reply from Instagram. Do not describe this as a shared Instagram agent-assignment inbox or native WhatsApp transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I automate every question?
No. Start with accurate repeatable information; review exceptions and generated answers personally.
Does a responder guarantee an instant reply?
No. Processing, permissions and provider restrictions affect delivery.
Where do I check cost and access?
Use current pricing. Fixed replies, AI credit and lead collection are distinct capabilities.
